According to the American Cancer Society, lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in both men and women. Because the symptoms of lung cancer are often vague or not noticed immediately, the disease is sometimes quite advanced before it is diagnosed. Once diagnosed, events tend to move quickly and both patients and their support network often feel overwhelmed. This book provides information to help patients and consumers begin to understand what a lung cancer diagnosis can involve.

Now in its third edition, Lung Cancer: from Diagnosis to Treatment is meant to be a basic introduction to lung cancer and some of the procedures and therapies that patient’s may encounter. Written in clear and precise language, the first two chapters of this book focus on information about lung cancer and its symptoms. The third chapter is more involved and discusses some of the tools used to diagnosis lung cancer. Chapters four through eight discuss different treatment options such as surgery, radiation and chemotherapy. These chapters include basic information on what to expect and potential side effects. Most procedures or treatments are described in brief paragraphs. The final chapters of the book touch on emotional coping and quitting smoking.

Lung cancer is a devastating disease. The information provided in this book is straightforward and basic. At 134 pages, this book doesn’t come close to answering all the questions that a lung cancer patient may have. However, it does provide a quick introduction to lung cancer and will help patients and caregivers to better understand what lies ahead. Recommended for consumer health collections that already have more in depth resources on lung cancer.

Written for patient and caregiver, this thorough and easy-to-read guide covers the basics of lung cancer and its management. Scott, a cardiothoracic surgeon specializing in lung cancer treatment, presents clinical information in a lucid and compassionate manner.

This well-organized book capably guides the reader through a logical series of discussions, ranging from how the lungs work to end-of-life care. Treatments by disease type and stage(and the staging process itself) are smoothly explained. Another strong point is the appendix, which contains a concise list of chemotherapy agents and provides essential drug information, including brand and generic names. Although the text lacks a formal glossary, definitions of technical terms are skillfully woven into the context. Few consumer health titles are exclusively devoted to lung cancer, and this one should prove a valuable addition to consumer health and public library collections.

Understanding Your.inddNew Study Shows that Living Wills Are often Misinterpreted
In a study just released by the Journal of Emergency Medicine, Fred Mirarchi, D.O. and colleagues reveal disturbing facts about the misinterpretation of living wills by health professionals. The study examines the difference between a DNR – Do Not Resuscitate – order and a living will in the mind of healthcare professionals.

Approximately 750 physicians who practice primary care, internal medicine, and emergency medicine were surveyed. The study showed that 78 percent of these physicians misinterpreted the living will as a DNR order and 64 percent misinterpreted a DNR order as comfort care/end of life care, when in fact, the patient wanted aggressive care unless terminally ill.

According to Dr. Mirarchi, “Because of misunderstanding and misinterpretation of living wills, there is a clear and present danger to patient safety nationwide for both the healthy and critically ill population.” Dr. Mirarchi is also the author of Understanding Your Living Will.

The Consumer Connection, a publication of the America Medical Library Association, has released book reviews on two new Addicus Books titles. In a review of Lung Cancer: A Guide to Diagnosis and Treatment (2nd ed.), the journal said, “Walter Scott, M.D., delivers a must-have resource for patients and their family members. This book is highly recommended. It’s easy to read and the medical terms are defined.

The Consumer Connection also offered high marks for Colon and Rectal Cancer—from Diagnosis to Treatment (2nd ed.) by Paul Ruggeri, M.D. and Addison Tolentino, M.D. The journal said, “Written in an accessible and reassuring manner, readers will easily find answers to important questions in this book about colon and rectal cancer. 1886039372Book Launch Is Busy Time for Bay Area Author
The launch of Battle at Alcatraz is keeping author Ernie Lageson busy this spring. In addition to doing a variety of print interviews, he has appeared on San Francisco’s Evening Magazine (KPIX-TV), Day Break (KRON-TV), and Sundays at Seven (KGO-TV). Bay Area publicist Janet Andrew, Robinson Andrew Media, arranged all interviews.
Lageson has also made several appearances as “Author of the Day” at the Alcatraz Island bookstore. The former prison is a popular tourist attraction in California. Lageson will also be on hand at Alcatraz in early May for a commemoration of the 53rd anniversary of the prison uprising. Battle at Alcatraz—A Desperate Attempt to Escape the Rock details the mass escape attempt of 1946 in which guards, including Lageson’s father, were taken hostage.

In March, Lageson signed books and gave a presentation to a standing-room-only crowd at Barnes & Noble on Taylor Street in the Bay Area.

A review in the April 1 issue of Library Journal recommends Battle at Alcatraz, saying, “Author Ernie Lageson thoroughly researched this tragedy, giving the reader a real feeling of what happened that day.”
