The Twelfth Victim—The Innocence of Caril Fugate in the Charles Starkweather Murder Rampage, is the basis for a Showtime documentary that was released in February 2023. In 1957, Charles Starkweather, Lincoln, Nebraska, became one of the nation’s first spree killers. After kidnapping his former girlfriend, Caril Fugate, age 15, he killed 11 people across Nebraska and Wyoming. He was captured, and in 1958, he was found guilty of murder and sentenced to die in Nebraska’s electric chair. He was executed in 1959. Fugate was sentenced to life in prison; however, in 1976, she was paroled after serving 17 years.
