Jon H. Powell, J.D., is an attorney in private practice with ShowsPowell PLLC, Attorneys at Law, in the Jackson, Mississippi, metropolitan area. He has practiced law in Mississippi for more than eighteen years. He earned his bachelor of science degree at Mississippi College in 1991 and earned his Juris Doctor from the University of Mississippi in 1994. Powell is a member of the family law section of the Mississippi bar. While his practice is a general civil litigation law firm in the areas of estate planning and probate/administration, real estate law, and general civil litigation, his practice throughout the years has always focused on divorce and family law. Over the years Powell has represented hundreds of clients involved in divorce and custody disputes in courtrooms across the state of Mississippi.
Powell believes that parties are always better satisfied with outcomes they have a part in crafting—litigation is sometimes unavoidable and necessary. In those cases, Powell focuses on his client’s objectives and the steps and processes necessary to achieve those objectives. While objectives often change during litigation, Powell understands that his client is best served when there is client participation, forward progress, and finally closure. Powell is a big fan of mediation when the parties cannot reach an agreement on their own or with the assistance of their attorneys.
Powell has taught business law at Mississippi College as an adjunct professor, and currently co-teaches his Sunday School class with his wife, Deanna, at Crossgates Baptist Church in Brandon, Mississippi.
Powell’s law firm has twice been recognized for their work with The Center for Violence Prevention in Pearl, Mississippi, receiving the 2007 Angel Award and the 2010 Hero of the Year award from the Jackson Free Press for their work representing victims of domestic violence.
