Bret L. Fisher, M.D., is an ophthalmologist in private practice at The Eye Center of North Florida, in Panama City, where he specializes in refractive cataract surgery. Dr. Fisher was the first eye surgeon in Florida to perform femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery; he’s also skilled in advanced custom LASIK.
A magnum cum laude graduate of Duke University, in Durham, North Carolina, Dr. Fisher was also an honors graduate of Duke University School of Medicine. After a general medicine internship at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital, Santa Barbara, California, he completed his ophthalmology residency at Wills Eye Hospital, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
In 1993, Dr. Fisher joined Newberry Eye Clinic in Panama City, Florida, as medical director and attending surgeon. With the merger in 2000 of Newberry Eye Clinic and two other eye practices, Dr. Fisher became the medical director of The Eye Center of North Florida and its freestanding ambulatory surgery center, The Laser and Surgery Center. The Eye Center is nationally recognized for its excellence in performing cataract surgery and the center’s ophthalmologists frequently host visiting eye surgeons from around the world.
At The Eye Center of North Florida, Dr. Fisher has also established an active clinical research department. He and his staff have participated in many important studies, including the FDA trials for new multifocal and toric multifocal intraocular lens implants.
Along with coauthor Dr. Garland, Dr. Fisher and staff have also participated in pharmaceutical trials for postcataract inflammation, dry eye, and diabetic eye disease. Dr. Fisher travels widely and frequently lectures on advances in cataract surgery and other ophthalmology issues.
Board-certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and certified in cataract and implant surgery and LASIK by the American College of Eye Surgeons, as well as being an active member of ASCRS, Dr. Fisher is always up to date on the newest ideas, concepts, and technologies in ophthalmology. He serves as a consultant to the industry and a teacher and mentor to his fellow surgeons.
