Joseph F. Capella, M.D., is a plastic and reconstructive surgeon in private practice in Ramsey, New Jersey and New York City. He has performed over 3,000 body contouring procedures on patients who have undergone major weight loss. Dr. Capella has been conducting clinical research in surgery for morbid obesity since 1987. He serves on the Post-Bariatric Task Force with the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) and has co-authored two books on body contouring after major weight loss.
After receiving his Bachelor of Arts degree from Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, and completing post-graduate studies at Columbia University in New York City, Dr. Capella attended medical school at the State University of New York Health Science Center at Brooklyn. He then completed a residency in general surgery at St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital in New York City and a fellowship in plastic and reconstructive surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota.
Dr. Capella is certified by the American Board of Surgery (ABS) and the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS). He is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a clinical assistant professor of surgery at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey at Newark .
He frequently lectures on body contouring techniques at national and international plastic surgery conferences. He has appeared as an expert guest on several television shows including 20/20 and The View. Dr. Capella has co-authored numerous articles for medical journals and teaches courses about post-bariatric body contouring to fellow surgeons.
